Grayling Day

The Club has arranged a Grayling taster day which will take place on the 20th November 2106 on club waters at Willington.

The idea behind the day is to get anglers interested in Grayling Fishing and to try and determine the levels of grayling present in our waters. The event will also be attended by Stuart Wardle who is a an England international Fly angler and Guide as well as the Regional secretary for the Grayling Society and has a wealth of knowledge in relation to this beautiful fish and the techniques required, also in attendance will be members of the Grayling Society, who will be able to advise members on techniques and tackle to tackle these fantastic fish.
In addition Stuart will have some gear on hand to allow members to get a greater insight into the methods and have a hands on approach to Grayling fishing so please come dressed to fish.

The agenda for the day will be :
Meet at Jubilee Bridge carpark Grid Reference NZ 20859 34407, Nearest postcode DL15 0DJ.  For approximately 10am with a view to commence fishing from 11am. Stuart and the members of the Grayling Society will be on hand to answer any questions relating to tackle and techniques.
We are also aiming to have tea and coffee available for those that attend and everything to plan there will be soup available.The day is aimed at all angling abilities with enjoyment the key aim. For those anglers that want to fish we will be aiming to collect some data in relation to fish sizes, numbers and spread.
As a little taster we have also had a Rio Euro Nymph Fly-line donated to the event by Sandra at Jubilee Lakes/ Anglers Lodge, this will either be given as a prize for the largest fish or we could hold a raffle on the day with the line as a prize.
For those of you that are interested in attending if you could let the secretary know at the earliest opportunity to ensure that there are sufficient refreshments available.
As this is an event totally reliant on the river levels, can you please contact Shaun O’Dowdin the event of high water levels for clarification on whether the event is to go ahead.

What will October bring?

As the Trout rods are put away the Salmon fishers will be hoping for a bumper October.

We have had another dry year on the river and it certainly needs a lift now to get things going. Every river around us seems to have had regular spates this summer but the Wear has not. Fingers crossed that the rains come in early and the fish quickly follow.

Please be sure to report your catches back to the club we really value all information about success on our waters.

Tucking away the Trout rod or Gearing Up for Grayling ?

As we enjoy the last knockings of the Trout season are you looking at cleaning your gear and putting it away for the winter or have you got Grayling on your mind?

Anglers have reported large numbers of Grayling being caught when fishing for Trout, including everything from  small fish to some above 2lb. 10 to 12 inch fish have not been uncommon.

For visitors , day tickets are available throughout the winter and for members a spot of Grayling fishing could add extra value to that membership. If you do get out there catching Grayling please be sure to let us know how well you do.

Carry Your Cards

Some great work has been done by the bailiff team working closely with the EA and police this year to reduce the amount of poaching on our waters. Our members pay their membership and licence fees and deserve to have their fishing protected.

YOU can help.

The bailiffs are experiencing a number of members who are not carrying their membership books or EA licences. Please help us to protect your fishing by always having your membership book available to show when requested.

Please remember, any person who is not carrying a valid membership book could be asked to leave the water, and in the case of an EA licence could be prosecuted. In protecting your fishing we do not wish to spoil your fishing, your help is invaluable.

 

K D Johnson Trophy

The K D Johnson Memorial Competition wash fished today at Witton Castle Lakes. Conditions were kind to the anglers, after a few weeks of difficult fishing conditions the day began cooler with good cloud cover and a light breeze.

This years winner is Norman Fletcher with a three fish bag of 8 1/2 lbs. Here we see Keith Johnson presenting the trophy at his father’s bench and the winning bag of fish. The Glenfiddich Malt provided a nice little toast at the end of a great day.

Water

The Wear has been desperately low all summers while other rivers with headwaters further west seem to have had regular lifts.

The good news is that at this moment we have a rise in level of about 18inches which may increase yet. So with a bit of luck we will see the excess moss washed out and fish start to run.
