Just 6 miles from historic Durham City in the heart of the North East of England Willington Angling Club is the home of game angling on the middle and upper stretches of the River Wear this is a small friendly club formed in 1958 by local residents of the old Crook and Willington urban district.

1996 saw the boundaries for membership extended to cover the whole of the then Wear Valley District Council Area. Visitors are welcome from far and wide.

Willington Waters offer deep slow running pools,  steady glides and fast running riffles.

Wading is generally easy  with gravel, stones and smaller rocks though as  with all waters care should be excercised at all times especially in deep pools or fast running currents. It’s always worth checking the river levels in advance with the link provided to the EA site.

 

 

We offer excellent fishing for Trout, Grayling, Salmon and Sea Trout on approx. 3 miles of river in the Willington area with a further 21/2 to 3 miles upstream at Eastgate (predominantly worm and spinning for Salmon and Sea Trout though some pools are suitable for fly too). Add to this the excellent Ferryham Association Croxdale waters on The Rivers Browney and Wear and we really do offer a fantastic member’s package.

 

 

‘Seldom Seen, Never Seen, Todhills Bank & Byers Green’

 

Coarse Fishing is offered on the “Seldom Seen” Ponds (south side of the river close to the villages of Newfield and Byers Green) which are well stocked with Perch, Roach, Bream and Tench plus a few Carp and Pike. Full club membership includes fishing these ponds with a reduced permit available for the ponds only.

 

The River Wear.

A free stone, rain fed, spate river the Wear rises in the high Penines formed by the joining of the Burnhope Burn and Killhope Burn at Wearhead. From here the river flows eastwards growing as it rushes and tumbles past Eastgate, Stanhope, Frosterley and

Wolsingham, by now starting to slow a little as Weardale opens out heading towards Bishop Auckland before reaching our waters at Willington and passing gently on through the magnificent Cathedral City of Durham.

Then next, towards Chester-le-Street where it runs close to the test-match venue and home of Durham County Cricket Club (Emirates Riverside ICG) before arriving at the North Sea at Sunderland, 60 miles ( 97km) from it’s source.
